How the national model works

Most of the valet trash industry is consolidated under large national providers, several of them private-equity owned. Scale brings real capabilities: multi-market coverage for national management companies, established software, big operations teams. It also brings the structural habits of scale: rotating account reps, centralized call centers, and, at many nationals, collection labor sourced through subcontractors and gig-style apps rather than employees.

Why the labor model is the question that matters most

The person walking your breezeways at 10 PM is the service. Ask any provider: are your collectors W-2 employees or 1099 subcontractors? The answer carries two consequences. First, accountability: employees are trained, scheduled, and answerable inside the company; app-sourced labor can rotate nightly. Second, liability: uninsured subcontractors who get hurt on your property have a way of making the property part of the claim. Alfred staffs every route with background-checked W-2 employees covered under our commercial policy, including workers compensation, and a certificate of insurance is available on request. Ask every provider you evaluate for the same document.

Questions that separate providers fast

Who exactly do I call when something goes wrong, and what is your guaranteed response time? What happens, contractually, when you miss a pickup? Are your collectors employees or subcontractors, and may I see your COI? How long has the rep I am talking to been on my account, and who had it before them? What do your agreements run, and what are the exit terms? Contracts in this industry typically run one to three years, so you are choosing a multi-year relationship. Choose it with the diligence a multi-year relationship deserves.

What a local operator changes

With a local company, the distance between your problem and the decision-maker is one phone call. Alfred is owned in Lexington and serves Lexington, Georgetown, Nicholasville, and Richmond on purpose: every property is close enough that the owner can be on-site fast. The guarantees are in writing, double credit on missed pickups and 2-hour callbacks during business hours, because a local company reputation is its entire pipeline. None of that makes national providers villains. It means the trade-offs are real, and you should price them consciously.
